   Ramadan is the holy month in which Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Holy Koran. Muslims strictly observe the traditions of Ramadan and it is a time of fasting from sunrise to sunset. The fast is broken at sunset with the Iftar feast, the timings of which are given in daily papers and broadcast on the radio. Ramadan may affect you holiday because there is no alcohol served until after 7pm and no live music, disc jockeys, dancing or other entertainment at any time.

   "What am I doing down here? I wonder my nose and forehead pressed to the floor as I kneel in prayer. My knee-caps ache, my arm muscles strain as I try to keep the pressure off my forehead. I listen to strange utterings of the person praying next to me. It's Arabic, and they understand what they are saying, even if I don't. So, I make up my own words, hoping God will be kind to me, a Muslim only twelve hours old. OK.

   Chairman of Kazakh Agency for Religious Affairs Kairat Lama Sharif met with media representatives at the Presidential Center of Culture in Astana.The meeting was held to present the newly established agency for religious affairs. This agency intends to raise public awareness in the field of citizens' rights to freedom of religion; develop proposals to improve legislation for religious associations; organize and conduct activities that promote stability and spiritual enlightenment of Kazakhstani society.

Not all of me you'll see
But what you should appreciate
Is that the choice I make is free

I'm not plagued with depression

I don't envy other women
And I'm certainly not confused

   Firstly, the matter of dress. A Muslim woman may wear whatever she pleases in the presence of her husband and family or among women friends. But when she goes out or when men other than her husband or close family are present she is expected to wear a dress which will cover all parts of her body, and which should not reveal the figure. What a contrast with Western fashions which every year concentrate quite intentionally on exposing yet another erogenous zone to the public gaze!

   In Almaty 8-9 of may at hotel "Parasat" was held an exhibition of the Arabian calligraphy. The presentation of the translation of Koran into Kazakh and English languages were held within the limit of the exhibition.
